Firbank pub declares business as usual after shot is fired

The Firbank pub in Newall Green is open for business again today after a shot was fired at a window last night (Thursday Jan 8).

Detectives are investigating the incident which happened at about 8.25pm when a thug fired a single shot from a shotgun at a window into the pool room, which was visibly empty at the time.

No one was injured and in a defiant Facebook post, bosses of the popular pub said it would be back to business as usual today.

The person with the gun is suspected to be a man and described as wearing a tracksuit with the hood up.

The offender then ran off possibly with a number of other offenders, towards Greatfield Road.

Detective Inspector Gareth Davies, said: “The pool room was well lit and clearly empty when the shot was fired, making us believe that this was more an act of posturing as opposed to a concerted effort to injure or kill someone.

“We are working to establish who may be behind the shooting and who they were sending a message to and while we are thankful no one was injured, clearly those responsible have access to a deadly weapon and we will be doing everything we can to identify them.

“We cannot allow individuals or groups to use weapons to intimidate and threaten our communities and I would urge residents to help and support us with our investigation.

“If anyone was in the area and saw something of note or if anyone knows the reasons behind this I would encourage them to call us in complete confidence.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4882, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
