momma-b-sWythenshawe’s community spirit has been praised after Woodhouse Park business, Momma B’s stepped in to help, following a fire at an industrial unit which left about 2000 homes and businesses without power yesterday.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in a tunnel on Southmoor Road carrying high voltage cables at 11.46am. Six fire engines were at the scene.

Momma B’s Sandwich Bar on Portway, Woodhouse Park was one of many businesses affected by the power cut but helped to provide meals for elderly and vulnerable people in the area.

The business stepped in after getting a plea for help from Wythenshawe Community Housing Group. They cooked the meals and delivered them to the housing group’s offices who then fed local people in the area, prompting praise from councillor Sarah Judge.

On their Facebook page Momma B’s said “It feels good to know that we have done our bit to help local vulnerable elderly people living alone”.

Schools and businesses in the area were affected by the power cut with Manchester Health Academy closing early. Tesco in Baguley was still open for business but was accepting payment by cash only.
