A major event gets underway this morning aimed at inspiring women in Wythenshawe to take up healthy lifestyles and new careers.
The event, starting at 10am at Wythenshawe Forum, has been organised as part of this week’s International Women’s Day celebrations and will focus on health, well-being, opportunities, challenges, and successes.
‘Wythenshawe Women Can’ embraces the theme of the nationwide ‘This Girl Can’ campaign to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability.
Organisers say women and girls are traditionally under-represented in sport and physical activity and face a number of barriers to participation. Wythenshawe Women Can seeks to remove these barriers and connect women and girls to opportunities for participation in sporting activity, careers and healthy lifestyles.
Showcasing everything to do with sport and healthy living in Wythenshawe and beyond. This day of activities at the Forum will highlight careers in sport and health and celebrate the contribution of women working in these fields.
From career speed dating with an NHS Surgeon, to exercising with your toddler, to cooking your own healthy lunch – there will be something on offer for women of all ages and backgrounds.
The event is backed by Wythenshawe MP, Mike Kane and is sponsored by Airport City Manchester.
Mr Kane said: “The aim of the event is to engage and inspire Wythenshawe women in healthy lifestyles and new careers! We want the UK’s future surgeons, Olympic athletes and footballers to be women from Wythenshawe. We want girls growing up in our community to know no bounds to their aspirations and ambition.
“We want women from all over Wythenshawe ages 0 to over 100 to come along, challenge themselves and try something new for free.
“I would like to put on record my thanks to all the partners whose open and can do approach has made this event possible including Wythenshawe Forum Trust, University Hospital South Manchester, Manchester City Council, Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and The Manchester College.
“We are pleased to have Airport City Manchester as our event sponsor this year. As a major local investment project it’s great to have them working with the community in Wythenshawe.”
Lynda Shillaw, MAG Property CEO said: “Airport City Manchester are pleased to be sponsoring International Womens Day in Wythenshawe, helping to inspire women in our local community to participate in the brilliant opportunities available.
“Building upon the very positive momentum achieved to date at Airport City, we are now stepping up our focus on delivery and creating new jobs in the wider area. Were excited to be attracting serious interest across a range of regional, national and international businesses.”
