Woman, 79, critical after collision with stolen car

RTAPolice are appealing for witnesses after a 79-year-old woman was left in a critical condition when she was hit by a stolen car in Northern Moor.

The stolen VW Golf  with the registration number ending FNM collided with the woman as she crossed Sale Road at around 6.45pm on Saturday 9 April 2016, after it had been pursued by police.

The Golf was spotted by police on Button Lane who then lost sight of it. It turned right onto Sale Road where it collided with the woman.

The woman sustained a serious leg injury and was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, where she remains in a serious, but stable, condition following surgery.

The VW Golf, which had been stolen from an address in Heaton Mersey on 7 April 2016, failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Peplar Avenue, Northern Moor.

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and burglary and remain in police custody for questioning.

The incident was referred to the GMP Professional Standards Branch and the IPCC.
Sergeant Lee Westhead said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward and assist us with our enquiries.

“Likewise, should anyone driving around that area at the time of the collision happen to have a dashcam in their car, please check the footage for a sighting of the stolen VW Golf or anything which may help us with the investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number 090416/1931 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
