Councillors have rejected plans to build houses on the site of the Tatton Arms pub in Northenden which has been left derelict for more than eight years.

Awais Shahid of Britannia Group & Grasscroft Property wanted to develop the former pub into nine apartments and build an additional 14 houses on green belt land.

Local residents questioned whether building on the green belt was necessary to make the Tatton Arms development viable and were concerned about the impact on trees and wildlife as well as on parking in the area.

Councillors visited the site yesterday (Thursday Feb 23) and rejected the plans saying residents’ concerns had not been addressed.

In a statement on behalf of Northenden’s three councillors – Chris Webb, Mary Monaghan, and Sarah Russell, they said: “This application as it stands, does not in our view, represent the best interests of the local community.

“We desperately want to see the Tatton Arms redeveloped and urge the owner and developer to engage with planning officers to work through the concerns of local residents and come back with a more suitable proposal.”
