REVIEW

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ by Tennessee Williams
Northenden Players Theatre Club

This was the fourth play in Northenden Players’ current season
Set in the Pollit family home in Tennessee, celebrations are due to take place to mark Big Daddy’s 65th birthday. This should be a happy occasion, but an uneasy mood soon develops. Brick (Alasdair King), an ex-professional footballer is injured and drinks heavily.

Faithful wife Maggie (Jo Taylor) tries to cheer him up in their childless relationship, and elder brother Gooper (Dave Barker) and wife Mae (Debs Grace), who have five children, delight in mocking Brick and Maggie’s brittle relationship.

Big Daddy (Bill Platt) and his loyal wife Big Mama (Lesley Bowers) have been told by the hospital clinic that he merely has a ‘spastic’ colon; later the truth emerges that he has cancer and it is inoperable.

This powerful play illustrates the dilemma of competing priorities in life, namely love, honesty, integrity, money and status.

There were outstanding performances from Jo Taylor, Alasdair King, Lesley Bowers, Bill Platt, Debs Grace and Dave Barker. Francis Lee and Tom Chinnery gave fine support, as did the four children, ably played by May Davis, Ada Davis, Joseph Dillon and Monty Harrison-Stirling.

The play was skilfully directed by Mary Dillon, and Nigel Machin’s brilliant set was beautifully lit by Dave McGuire.

The Theatre Club’s next production will be ‘Three Sisters’ by Anton Chekhov which runs from 25th to 31st March (excluding Monday 26th) at the Victoria Road Hall, Northenden.
