Wythenshawe tower blocks “do not have Grenfell-style cladding” says MP

DSC_0131MP Mike Kane has assured residents living in tower blocks in Wythenshawe that none are fitted with the controversial cladding linked to Grenfell Tower tragedy in London last week.

The rapid spread of the fire in which at least 79 people are dead or missing presumed dead, is still being investigated but has been attributed to the use of a type of aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding which is banned in Europe and, according to Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, is also banned in the UK.

Councils and housing associations across the country have been ordered to urgently check whether the tower blocks in their areas have been cladded using similar materials to those at the Grenfell Tower.

Melanie Dawes of the Department for Communities and Local Government said: “It was important to stress that ACM cladding is not of itself dangerous, but it is important that the right type is used”.

Wythenshawe Community Housing Group says they will  be working with Greater Manchester Fire and fire risk consultants to review any concerns that arise from the incident for tower blocks.

They said in a statement: “The Group has in place regular fire risk assessments, inspections and protocols to manage fire safety equipment and ensure the safety of residents is priority.

“As more information is released into the cause of the fire the Group will take all necessary steps to check and ensure the safety of its customers and stakeholders.

“The Greater Manchester Fire Authority have issued their contact centre phone number for any residents that may be concerned and seeking advice or require a home visit.  Their number is 0800 555 815.”

Safety concerns have also focussed on whether sprinkler systems should be fitted in tower blocks and the effectiveness of advice to remain in properties in the event of a fire.
