This is a superb celebration of the songs of Dusty Springfield held together with an original and convincing story.
Son of a Preacher Man is not a juke-box show purely for die-hard Springfield fans, although the excellent delivery of those classic tunes by a very strong cast is sure to please.
The show tells the story of three broken hearts in search of the one man who could ever help them… the legendary owner of the swinging 1960s Soho joint who dispensed advice to cure the loneliest of hearts, where the kids danced the night away to the latest crazes and dared to dream of love.
The three, wonderfully portrayed by Diana Vickers, Debra Stephenson and Michael Howe, each have their own story to tell and are searching for answers. But 50 years after the venue’s heyday, it is left to the owner’s son to try to fix their broken hearts.
Diana Vickers is sensational showing that the vocal talent that got her to the semi-final of X-Factor is matched by a strong dramatic performance. Debra Stephenson best know for her impressions on the likes of Dead Ringers, also delivers a strong performance.
But there are few who put a foot wrong in this show from the over-the-top Cappuccino Girls to the wonderful musicians who blend with the action on stage to great effect.
The show is an excellent homage to Springfield and is bound by a story which is believable and strong.
Son of a Preacher Man is surely currently the best show in town.
