Movers and shakers who have influenced Manchester life are to feature in a stunning photography competition by students from The Manchester College which opens tomorrow  (September 4th).

Musicians Clint Boon and The Happy Mondays, boxer Ricky Hatton and poet Lemn Sissay are some of the famous faces from Greater Manchester who will feature in the exhibition at the Nexus Art Cafe in Manchester.

More than 30 people who have made a cultural difference to the city have been photographed for the ‘Greater Mancunians’ exhibition by 30 Level 3 Photography students from the College’s Northenden campus.

The ongoing project has been a year in the making, with students gaining unparalleled access to stars of music, sport, art and business, and directing each individual photo shoot to capture a series of striking yet intimate shots.

Now photos of celebrities, sports stars, actors and activists, including performance poet John Cooper Clarke, boy band Take That, comedian Jason Manford, Tate director Maria Balshaw CBE, ballerina Tierney Heap and boxer Stacey Copeland, will grace the walls of Nexus Café in Manchester’s Northern Quarter when the four week exhibition launches .

Photography tutor Harry Potts said: “The project started when former student Harry Yeates photographed his idol John Cooper Clarke for his end of year project. The other students asked to do more and it just snowballed from there.

“I’ll set the meetings up, but then it’s down to the students to direct the photo shoot and create the image. The celebrities are quite happy to help our students and have been very accommodating during the shoots, which have taken place in the studio, down an alley or even up a ladder.

“The project not only gives the students great industry experience and some fantastic images for their portfolio, but the one thing they gain the most is confidence and life skills to be able to direct their subject and create some truly memorable images.”

Student Katie O’Neill, who completed her Level 3 Extended Diploma in photography with a distinction and is set to study BA Photography at Falmouth University, said:

“Over the past two years, I have photographed Bill Roach, Tierney Heap, Take That, Robert Powell and Graham Nash. Each photo shoot has allowed me to gain new knowledge from different experiences, from having only 10 minutes to get the shot to capturing fast movement. This has helped me to build up my skills and confidence, and has given me insight to working in a fast paced environment and working with others to create a project.

“Having my work featured in the exhibition is really exciting. I love people being able to see my work and I love watching their reactions to it. I am proud and thankful to be a part of this project.”

‘Greater Mancunians’ runs from 4 to 29 September at Nexus Art Cafe, Dale Street, Manchester, M1 1JW.

Councillors have rejected plans to build houses on the site of the Tatton Arms pub in Northenden which has been left derelict for more than eight years.

Awais Shahid of Britannia Group & Grasscroft Property wanted to develop the former pub into nine apartments and build an additional 14 houses on green belt land.

Local residents questioned whether building on the green belt was necessary to make the Tatton Arms development viable and were concerned about the impact on trees and wildlife as well as on parking in the area.

Councillors visited the site yesterday (Thursday Feb 23) and rejected the plans saying residents’ concerns had not been addressed.

In a statement on behalf of Northenden’s three councillors – Chris Webb, Mary Monaghan, and Sarah Russell, they said: “This application as it stands, does not in our view, represent the best interests of the local community.

“We desperately want to see the Tatton Arms redeveloped and urge the owner and developer to engage with planning officers to work through the concerns of local residents and come back with a more suitable proposal.”

Northenden man part of £4.5 million drugs ring jailed

montageA Northenden man was among four to be jailed for conspiring to flood the streets with £4.5million of class A drugs.

Raymond Gilham aged 30 from Longley Lane,  Northenden was sentenced to 8 years 8 months for conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

Shaun Morfitt aged 36, of The Grange, Cleveland, was sentenced to 18 years; Dean McCaffrey 30, from Brede Walk, Sale, to 22 years and Colin McCaffrey 31, Bank Street, Golbourne  to 22 years.

The four were sentenced as part of Operation Petral, a crackdown on the supply of class A drugs and organised crime in Manchester, Preston and Cleveland between March and October 2015.

In September 2015 a vehicle was stopped travelling from Manchester to Cleveland with a hidden compartment containing two kilos of cocaine.

On the same day police raided an address in Northenden where six kilos of cocaine and approximately three kilos of heroin were seized.

In October 2015 police searched an address in Droylsden where a kilo of cocaine was recovered inside the property.

A further kilo of cocaine was recovered later in the day from a vehicle in the Droylsden area.

Further enquiries revealed the group had been involved in the distribution of £4.5million of class A drugs.

Detective Inspector Rob Cousen, of GMP’s Serious and Organised Crime Group, said: “Drugs cause widespread damage in the community and they will not be tolerated.

“I hope that this sentence sends the message that we relentlessly pursue and dismantle organised groups that seek to profit from flooding the streets with these substances.”

“I want to pay tribute to the operational teams across the Country who worked together, playing a vital role in finding and convicting these men.”

Historic first for Wythenshawe school who help protect Northenden war memorial

CenotaphStudents at Manchester Health Academy in Northenden have become first in North of England to list a First World War Memorial

The year eight students at MHA in Wythenshawe have helped to list their local war memorial – the Northenden Cenotaph.

The pupils came across their local war memorial as part of work they were doing to find out  about the experiences of local soldiers who fought and died in the First World War. With help from Heritage Schools, they discovered that the memorial was not listed and decided to apply to Historic England, to ensure its protection in future years.

The students visited the memorial, took photographs and made detailed notes on its setting and design, as well researching its history. With the support of teacher, Steph Morris, they completed their application and sent it off to be assessed by the Historic England Listing Team.
