Wythenshawe Town clinch promotion in style with another impressive victory

Mersey Valley 0 – 5 Wythenshawe Town

Wythenshawe Town have secured their place in Cheshire League 1 with another impressive victory, coming off the back of their 9-0 win just a couple of days earlier.

The club go up with games to spare and face the prospect of providing more silverware for their trophy cabinet in cup competitions as well.

It was fitting that the fixture, originally listed as an away match was switched at the request of Mersey Valley, so a home crowd of 81 could watch the club clinch promotion.

The game began as a tight affair but after hat-trick hero Ben Brooks scored from a penalty minutes before half time, the floodgates opened in the second half with two more from Brooks and goals from Remi Williams, and Alex Elliot

There was an early scare for the home side as the visitors had a chance parried by the keeper, but there were few chances for either side in a tight affair in the first half which Wythenshawe just about edged in terms of possession and keeping the ball in the opposition half.

And the deadlock was broken minutes before half time with a penalty converted by Brooks who doubled the lead shortly after the break.

Some great defending saw Wythenshawe winning everything at the back and Mersey Valley were unable to make any impact with the aerial prowess of keeper Jacob keeping the visitors at bay.

After Brooks’ hat-trick Elliot came on as a substitute to get Town’s fourth with his second touch of the ball and fellow substitute Williams finished the scoring with a fine header.

Town can now enjoy their triumph and with a at least one cup final to look foward to, their season is far from over. It’s onwards and upwards for WTFC.
