Young carers to showcase poetry at book launch

Two young carers from Wythenshawe will be peforming  a selection of poems they have written about their experiences this week.

Author Zoe Lambert has led a twelve week creative writing project with a group of young carers from Manchester.

Supported by Liverpool based Writing on the Wall and Manchester based Family Action, the group of talented young people have created an incredible collection of stories and poems, which they will be reading and performing at    book launch at the Contact Theatre in Manchester on Friday (August 7).

The group have also been supported by writer Michelle Green (Jebel Marra, Comma press) and poet Mike Garry. Michelle and Mike will also take part in the book launch.

The project and anthology was funded by Lancaster University.

Zoe Lambert said:

“Caring has been a factor of my family life since my early twenties. But in running the project, I didn’t want to focus the workshops on writing about their roles as carers.

“I focused on the act of writing itself, and let their ideas take the lead. What stands out in this anthology is the freshness of young voices. Some of the writing was written at home in notebooks and on phones, and shared with me, and some was written in the workshops.

“The true stars are the participants themselves, who have dedicated time to their writing amidst their responsibilities at home, as well as their school and college work.”
