Manchester United legend is special guest at Wythenshawe Amateurs fixture

Wythenshawe Amateurs had a special guest at their fixture this weekend when Manchester United legend Paul Scholes put in an appearance.

The former United mid-field dynamo was at the game on Saturday to watch his son’s team Royton Town beat the Ammies 4-2.

Scholes’ son Arron, was on the bench for the game, played at St Paul’s High School in Newall Green.

The defeat leaves Wythenshawe in 11th place in the FBT Manchester Football League Premier Division with Royton in second place, level on points with leaders Prestwich Heys.

Wythenshawe’s next game is at home to AFC Monton on Saturday (January 23).

Wythenshawe Town, currently second in Cheshire League 1 did not play this weekend.

Wythenshawe Town continue their impressive record with victory over Grappenhall Sports in the group stages of the JA Walton Challenge.

Town have been scoring goals for fun in recent matches but this was a tight affair with one goal from Paul Walley (pictured) separating the two. The two sides will meet again at Grappenhall on January 24.

And in the FBT Manchester Football League Wythenshawe Amateurs  were on the wrong end of another heavy defeat, losing 6-3 away to Royton Town.

Wythenshawe Amateurs win £100,000 “super grant” to get new home

Wythenshawe Amateurs FC can look forward to a new home for the club after winning a £100,000 “super grant”.

The club, which hasn’t had a permanent home or facilities since 1960, was awarded the Budweiser Club Futures Super Grant after getting backing from football fans across the globe in a ballot.

In a statement today, the club thanked the campaign team and supporters who backed their bid.

The spokesman said: “The huge amount of hard work, time and effort put in by volunteers have created a new chapter in our history and words cannot express our gratitude.

“Once again congratulations to everyone, as you guys have helped us launch the first steps to building our new home.”

The Club Futures Super Grant is for non-league English football clubs. Each season, one club is awarded a £100,000 super grant.

The club has three senior teams, 21 Junior teams, three girl’s teams and a women’s team.

Facilities will be offered to local schools, community groups and other teams and it is hoped it will also allow the club to enter the FA Cup.

The Amateurs had already been awarded £50,000 from Budweiser following a bid which attracted praise from Newcastle United Boss Alan Pardew.
