FOOTBALL: Wythenshawe Town keep their “invincibles” tag after victory over Oldham Athletic youngsters

Wythenshawe Town 3-1 Oldham Athletic XI

Wythenshawe Town have retained the right to call themselves the “Invincibiles” as they notched up another victory in pre-season friendly against Oldham Athletic’s youth team.

Latics brought with them a sizeable and noisy crowd to help make for a great atmosphere in the blazing July sunshine at Ericstan Park.

Played in three 30 minutes periods, the game proved to be a good test for Wythenshawe who move into  Cheshire League 1 this season, having won the league and three cups, winning every game.

And it appears Town have lost the habit of losing, with a 3-1 victory over the young Oldham side.

Following a number of exchanges early in the game, Wythenshawe took the lead with a superb strike from the edge of the box by Jimmy McCarthy.

And the the home side could have doubled the lead but for a fantastic save by the Oldham keeper from a Jake Williams header.

The second goal came in the second half before adding a third, courtesy of a penalty, expertly slotted away by Jason Walley.

The visitors mounted a strong challenge in the third period and managed to pull one back and had it not been for some wasted chances in the final third, there could have been a grandstand finish.

But the victory was well deserved, and Wythenshawe must surely be looking forward to the new season.
