Pair pictured posing with lethal blade are jailed for killing of Wythenshawe teenager following retrial

Anthony EllisA man who was involved in the killing of a Wythenshawe teenager has had his murder conviction overturned and has been jailed for manslaughter following a retrial.

Anthony Ellis (pictured left), formerly of Hollyhedge Road and Kelvin Wilhelm, (below) formerly of Laburnam Road, Gorton, were both jailed for life in November 2010 for the killing of 18-year-old John Mulldowney at a party in Benchill Hill.

But their convictions were last year overturned by Appeal Court judges who ruled the original jury had not been fully instructed on the issue of ‘murderous intent’.

Kelvin WilhelmA subsequent retrial found Ellis, aged 27, guilty of manslaughter and given a 10 year jail sentence. He could be released on licence in December next year.

Wilhelm, aged 30, was convicted again of murder following the retrial and must serve at least 20 year in prison before he is eligible for parole.

Wythenshawe Hall becomes Hall of Sounds for budding young musicians

Budding young musicians will get the chance to write songs and play music this week as Brighter Sound delivers three days of sonic workshops at Wythenshawe Hall.

Anyone can attend the free workshops from Thursday July 31 to Saturday August 2 11am-4pm where there will be the chance to get involved with some local history, write songs and poetry, play music and create art with sounds; all working with professional artists and musicians. How radio presenter and DJ turned tables on diabetes at last year’s Wythenshawe Games

Dave CoxWith this year’s Wythenshawe Games now underway, radio DJ David Cox tells how a health check at last year’s games turned his life around.

Mr Cox, aged 49, is a  well-known figure  in Wythenshawe from his work on community radio station WFM and his DJing career. Last year, while doing interviews for the station, he was encouraged to have a health check as part of the Wythenshawe Games. The results – and a diagnosis of type two diabetes – led to an lifestyle overhaul. Toddler fights for life after collision with taxi in Sharston

A two-year-old girl is in a critical condition after a collision with a taxi Wythenshawe.

At about 12.15pm on Friday 25 July 2014, police were called by the ambulance service following reports that the two-year-old girl and a silver Ford Focus estate had collided on Crossacres, Sharston.

The young girl suffered a serious head injury and has been taken to Manchester Children’s Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Specially-trained officers are providing support to the family and an investigation has been launched.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4745.

Wythenshawe Games are back to keep the Olympic spirit alive and boost health

A community sporting event inspired by the Olympics is back for its third year in Wythenshawe – and is aiming to beat its record of getting 10,000 residents to take part in its fitness and cultural programme.

The first Wythenshawe Games was a nine-day community replica of London 2012.
