Teenagers arrested following fire at Wythenshawe primary school

Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson in Wythenshawe.

On Friday 5 June 2015, police were called to The Willows Primary School on Tayfield Road, to a report that a wooden playhouse was on fire.

Fire services were called to extinguish the blaze and there were no injuries.

Two boys aged, 13 and 14 have been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Inspector Luke Breakspear of South Manchester division said: “The playhouse was destroyed and I’m saddened at the news of the damage caused. I know this will resonate through the community as this is mindless damage and I’d like to reassure people that we are taking this seriously.

“I would also like to ask our community to please refrain from speculating about who is responsible on social media. If you have any information that may help our investigation, please contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4882 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Theatre trip is just champion for St Paul’s pupils

Optimized-20150331_163226Pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe enjoyed a brilliant production of Danny the Champion of the World presented by the London Contemporary Theatre at Preston Guild Hall.

The pupils were able to follow the journey of a young English boy, Danny, and his father William – the most exciting Dad a boy has ever had. The pair live in a caravan fixing cars for a living. His Dad has a secret hobby though of partaking in poaching pheasants.

When Hazell, a local developer, wants to take over the land their garage is on trouble ensues but Danny rises to the occasion, and him and his Dad come up with a most exciting plan. This will help make him become Danny the Champion of the World.

“The pupils really enjoyed the play which was based on Roald Dahl’s famous book,” said Ms Laura Huddleston from Saint Paul’s. “The script was fantastic and the acting was superb. The pupils have been talking about it ever since.”

“Danny the Champion of the World is one of Roald Dahl’s best loved books and the children were really looking forward to seeing it on stage and it certainly lived up to their high expectations, “commented Mrs Fiona Minshall, Head Teacher at Saint Paul’s. “The production was amazing bringing the book to life and firing the pupils’ imaginations.”

General Election 2015: Mike Kane holds Wythenshawe and Sale East for Labour

Labour’s Mike Kane has held his seat in Wythenshawe and Sale East in what has been a disappointing night for the Labour Party nationally.

Mr Kane, who won the seat in a by-election following the death of Paul Goggins last year, increased his majority and the big loser on the night was UKIP who were pushed into third place.

The Tories, who finished behind UKIP in the by-election, rallied and increased their vote from 3,479 to 11,124.

Mr Kane pledged to continue to fight for working people in Wythenshawe.

He said: “We’ll fight day in and day out to make sure working people across our great city are well represented and have the best we can possibly offer them and I pledge to do that this year, next year and the whole term of our parliament.”

It was a bad night for the Liberal Democrats in Greater Manchester. They lost Withington to Manchester councillor, Jeff Smith and Hazel Grove to the Tories.

And defeats for Labour meant it would be Tories who would be most likely to form a government with the latest predictions suggesting they would be the biggest party with just one seat short of a majority.
